Students in Grades 10 to 12 who perform well in the SAASTE Olympiad may qualify for the SAASTA National Science Olympiad, organised by the Department of Science and Technology. Top performers receive medals, a laptop, and an air ticket to attend international science forums in England or Australia.
Learners in Grades 8 to 11 must participate in the AMESA Math Challenge, a national mathematics competition. Top performers may be selected to represent South Africa in international events such as the Pan African Mathematics Olympiad (PAMO) and the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO).
All learners are required to prepare and submit a project for assessment during Project Day. Projects are evaluated by educators and serve as a term mark for science subjects. High-quality projects may progress to higher-level competitions.
