The Amazwi South African Museum of Literature presents an exhibition, Man of Letters, curated to show Ezekiel “Es’kia” Mphahlele in his own voice through the many letters in his own hand held in the museum's collection. Amazwi produced the first major exhibition of papers and artefacts from the J.M. Coetzee archives at the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas at Austin, together with its own Coetzee collections, honouring him in the year of his 80th birthday in 2020. The museum's permanent exhibition, also called Amazwi Elizwe / Landskrif, shows how South Africa's landscape has been represented in literature from colonial times to today, using original manuscripts, rare books, authors' notebooks and letters alongside audio, video and interactive touch screens. Outside there is a sculpture, 'Pencils', by Strydom van der Merwe and metal strips in the ground carrying quotations from three writers. The museum is open on weekdays 8.30-13.00 and 14.00-16.30, and on weekends and public holidays by appointment.

The Eastern Star is a gallery at Amazwi South African Museum of Literature in Makhanda that houses exhibits of 19th century printing equipment, including a 120-year old Wharfdale printing press, and an exhibition on the history of the press in South Africa. The Order of Ikhamanga in Gold awarded to Olive Schreiner and other artifacts are on display in the house.

New exhibitions at Olive Schreiner House Museum, completed in June 2026 as a complete update of the previous displays, with newly acquired items shown for the first time alongside graphics about Olive Schreiner's life and work.
