This collaboration forms part of the broader Integrated Justice System (IJS) modernisation efforts, where accurate person identification is a critical foundation for ensuring effective case management, safeguarding the integrity of the Criminal Justice System (CJS), and preventing identity fraud. Through these engagements, the IJS, working with SAPS and DCS took a lead in the development and rollout of applications such as the Person Identification and Verification Application (PIVA) and its enhanced version, PIVA 2, Person Identity Profile (PIP), and 1OP. To promote a fully integrated biometrics ecosystem across the CJS, the IJS has made these services, available to both SAPS and DCS. Developed by the IJS as part of its Person Verification Services, these services enable SAPS officials to verify the identity of individuals using fingerprint biometrics matched against DHA records. SAPS also receives immediate notifications regarding any prior criminal records, outstanding warrants, or other alerts, which significantly strengthens frontline decision-making at police stations. Furthermore, these services collectively support end-to-end person identification, verification, and tracking across IJS departmental systems. They ensure that an arrested person's biometrics are captured, enrolled, and instantly verified against authoritative DHA and SAPS databases.
