Partnerships for meaningful post-release employment (including EPWP employment, job-seeker database registration, learnerships/artisanship, youth programmes, and private business employment)
The Department of Correctional Services says it has multiple partnerships with stakeholders to support meaningful post-release employment for parolees and probationers, including EPWP employment via IDT, registration on the job seekers database (ESSA), learnership and artisanship via SETA (including skills to start small business), youth employment support via NYDA programmes, and employment opportunities through private businesses.
(1)(a) T he Department of Correctional Services has made progress in scaling up business partnerships to ensure meaningful release employment. The Department has multiple partnerships with stakeholders to ensure meaningful post-release employment, below are a few examples:
Substance Abuse Correctional Programme (awareness programme on substance abuse)
The Department says there are no incentivised drug-free units, but it offers a substance abuse awareness programme to offenders, parolees and probationers. For the 2025/26 financial year, it reported that 11773 offenders, parolees and probationers were reached through the Substance Abuse Correctional Programme, which aims to provide information, raise awareness and develop life skills to help offenders refrain from using addictive substances.
(2) There are no incentivised drug-free units, however, DCS conducts an awareness programme on substance abuse which is offered to offenders, parolees and probationers.
